Think Local, Think 104.8 FM - Radio Leyland

The Friends of Leyland community magazine is committed to bringing you the best local news and community articles each and every month, which is why we thought, “If we want to promote all things Leyland, who’s best to team up with?” Who better than the team over at Radio Leyland!

We recently caught up with Brian at Radio Leyland and wanted to introduce them to you as one of our new monthly columnists. “Thanks to Harry Longworth, proprietor of Friends of Leyland, for giving Radio Leyland this space! We’ll try to use it wisely.

Your local radio station started broadcasting on FM on 1st April 2019. Our signal nominally covers Leyland and the surrounding area - but you can usually hear us further afield in the car (tune your car radio to 104.8 FM) or anywhere online.

As a community radio station, Radio Leyland is non-profit and tailored to our local area. Most of our volunteers, some of which you can see in this article, are local and know Leyland well. We also like to support local organisations. One such is The Base Community Centre on Bannister Drive, Broadfield. Run by Youth and Community Worker Andrea Andrews – who, incidentally, is also our Thursday Breakfast show presenter – and her superb team of volunteers. The Base operates a Community Shop on Wednesdays, offering members access to low-cost food, toiletries and cleaning products, together with recipe ideas, and cooking-on-a-budget advice. Members pay £2.50 each visit and select 10 items of food and other products worth at least £20. Free fruit and vegetables are also available, plus other occasional ‘freebies’!

Andrea plans to expand the Shop into a One Stop facility, where members can meet, have a brew and bite to eat, use the Wellbeing Library and access support from the council, housing providers, mental health agencies and citizen’s advice.

Talking of food... a Community Café serving takeaway hot food and drinks runs every Monday, 10am to 4:30pm. (I can vouch for the tastiness of their ‘Full Monty’ breakfast barm). The café is free to all and will be ‘eat in’ from July Also look out for The Base’s Family Fun Day on Saturday 3rd July, celebrating being able to operate as a Community Centre again. Everyone’s welcome - enjoy free food, a bouncy castle, games, craft activities, live music and much more! Oh, and Radio Leyland might just be there, too!
