Graphic Design for Primary School Workbooks: St Margaret's Church of England Primary School

St Margaret's Church of England Primary School, part of the Emmanuel Diocese of Liverpool Academies Trust, is based in Warrington and operates within the education sector as a Multi Academy Trust. The school delivers high-quality primary education and approached Green Man Marketing to create engaging, print-ready maths workbooks for pupils across all year groups.

The Challenge

The school needed a cost-effective way to convert Oak Academy government maths workbooks into easy-to-use, printable resources. The main objectives were to maintain copyright compliance, design visually appealing layouts and covers for children, and create distinct workbooks for each school year to make them easily identifiable.

Producing high-quality workbooks was crucial to save on printing costs, ensure durability for year-round use, and reduce the administrative workload for teaching staff. Each year group required two workbooks (A and B), with clear contents pages detailing the topics covered throughout the year.

Our Approach

Green Man Marketing provided a full graphic design service, tailored to the school’s specific needs:

• Reviewing and organising over 1,000 PDF pages from Oak Academy.

• Adapting content accurately in close liaison with school staff.

• Designing distinctive, child-friendly covers and page layouts.

• Managing the entire workflow from planning and proofing to final approval for all years (1-6).

We began by finalising the front covers to establish a visual identity for each year. Workbook A for Year 1 was designed and submitted for approval while waiting on cover feedback. Once approved, contents pages, layouts, and topic designs were finalised, and the process was repeated across all year groups. Prompt feedback from the client ensured a smooth workflow.

Results

The project delivered immediate and measurable benefits:

• Staff saved significant time, as they no longer needed to photocopy and assemble individual pages.

• Printing costs were reduced, enabling the school to allocate more resources to student learning.

• Children responded positively to the engaging, easy-to-use layouts.

• The school now has a reusable, high-quality resource for future academic years.
